A 20-Year Analysis: Here's What We Learned About ERCOT

We analyzed 20 years of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data about the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to answer the question: How has ERCOT impacted energy production and the environment over the past two decades?

To determine the impact, we compared EPA eGRID data, which shows fossil fuel emissions and energy outputs in U.S. regions. The data includes ERCOT’s usage of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.

Key findings:

  1. In 2022, ERCOT’s energy mix included 72% non-renewable sources. This percentage is 8% lower than it was in 2019 and 26% lower than in 2004. This data shows Texas is actively working to improve the grid’s reliability using renewable power sources.
  2. ERCOT has ranked #2 in net generation out of the 26 eGRID subregions since 2004 based on available EPA data.
  3. Since 2004, there have been three years where the percentage of coal increased from the previous year: 2010, 2014, and 2021. All three years included unexpected Texas winter storms during February.
  4. The ERCOT subregion energy capacity peaked in 2020 at 186,699 megawatts (MW). This capacity doubles the 2004 grid capacity, which was only 88,542 MW.
  5. If renewable energy production continues to increase, ERCOT could balance its use of resources to equal amounts of fossil fuels and renewables by 2039.
  6. Gas is the main energy source for the ERCOT subregion. It has sustained a 45%–50% share in total energy mix since 2004.
  7. The net generation in megawatt-hours (MWh) follows the same trend as the Texas population. As the population in Texas increased, so did the net generation.

ERCOT’s energy mix is increasing use of renewable energy sources

Our analysis shows that the ERCOT subregion continues to balance its energy production with a more diversified portfolio. Since 2004, ERCOT has reduced its dependence on non-renewable resources by almost 27%, showing a significant shift towards renewable energy. Though Texas ranks #15 for solar production within the state’s energy mix, the transition to renewables helped Texas to rank second in the U.S. for the total amount of solar produced from each state, behind California.

The ERCOT subregion produced the second-highest MWh of power in the U.S. annually for the last 20 years. RFC West (RFCW) is the top subregion, and it includes Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia.

Coal generation increases in years with extreme winter weather in February

During extreme weather, energy usage increases due to higher demand for heating or cooling, which strains the power grid. The winter storms in Texas during 2010, 2014, and 2021 were the only years in the past two decades that coal generation increased from the previous year.

Our findings suggest that the ERCOT subregion depends more on coal when Texans need to warm their homes during a winter storm. While fluctuations occur, ERCOT has reduced its coal dependency by over 50% in the past 20 years.

ERCOT subregion megawatt capacity doubled over 20 years

As electrification increases with electric vehicles (EVs), solar energy, and smart homes, the need for power capacity also increases. There is a significant decrease from 2020 to 2021 due to winter storm Uri.

In 15 years, ERCOT could balance its production of renewable and non-renewable energy sources

If ERCOT maintains its renewable energy momentum, the subregion could achieve a 50-50 balance between renewable and non-renewable sources by 2039. While the use of renewable sources increases, non-renewable sources decrease.

Gas production remained steady over the last 20 years

The ERCOT region’s natural gas production has experienced minimal change since 2004. Compared to the solar generation trends, natural gas is a steady energy source for the subregion and will likely remain.

Methodology

The data referenced in this article excludes 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017, as no information was available from the EPA. Conclusion

Our analysis of 20 years of EPA data about the ERCOT subregion reveals a dynamic shift in the energy mix towards renewable sources. It also indicates Texas’ commitment to enhancing grid reliability while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Despite challenges like unexpected winter storms impacting coal usage, ERCOT has consistently ranked high in net generation among eGRID subregions since 2004. This showcases its significant energy capacity growth. As ERCOT aims for a more balanced energy mix by 2039, continued investment in renewable energy production could lead to a more sustainable energy landscape in Texas.
